Blackheath can't quite finish Sandwich

Written by Chris Willetts
Blackheath CC 1st XI opened their 2010 league campaign away at Sandwich on Saturday and despite a very positive all-round performance, were ultimately frustrated by an innocuous pitch and their opposition's top-order lacking in ambition. As Blackheath's lower order got out their Euros and European phrase books to wander into town for the renowned Sandwich fish & chips, Zobie Sharif and the in-form Stuart Fern opened up the innings, Sandwich having won the toss and inserting the visitors. Skipper Chris Willetts and Dipayan Paul also added steady, useful support in the middle of the innings. The Middlesex Premier League side were at full strength and fancied their…

Smashing start

Written by Chris Willetts
Brief report on Sunday's friendly away at Wanstead: Stuart Fern scored Blackheath's first hundred of the season with a powerful 137 against a decent Wanstead side in the Redbridge sunshine. Well supported by Seb Slater (22), Foysol Ahmed (21) and then BCC debutant Jahid Ahmed who made an aggressive 52 on debut. Blackheath closed the innings on a formidable looking 277 from 40 overs. Blackheath more or less killed the game off within the first 20 overs with Wanstead 75 for 3 at the half way stage thanks to some tight bowling, particularly from James Hands (2 wickets) and Paul…
