Battling win at Mostyn

Written by Tony Pope

Sunday 20 June. With us missing 5 of our regulars from the previous week's win, getting a side out was the first challenge. And as usual when we play Mostyn, it was almost bound to be a close, hard-fought game.

Come the game, we had a good XI ready and I managed to carry on Sasi's run of winning every toss so far this season. Batting first on an uneven wicket against former Blackheath legend Rupert Staple was tough going. Spry and Vic weathered 10 difficult overs and kept the score ticking along. Both fell before drinks but Simons Hudd and Wright worked hard to ensure plenty of wickets were in hand for a final push. The worth of this effort was really shown when we moved from 103 after 30 overs to 209 at the end of 40. Nid hit a couple of big sixes and reached 50 in the last over while Dan Lucas and Will May flayed double-quick 20s.

The Mostyn openers looked solid and though we were keeping things tight and Collo got a wicket, we were struggling at drinks with under 6 an over needed and 9 wickets standing. Simon Hudd came on and used the pitch and a swinging ball really well, taking wickets and keeping the runs down. At the other end, Jas Jandu came back and bowled a superb spell, grabbing 3 wickets in 4 overs. A couple of tough catches went down but our heads didn't and lots of important boundaries were saved. Mostyn's many supporters made for a noisy finish but Nid and Collo bowled a calm last 4 overs under pressure and got us home for an excellent win.

I had three catches dropped off my bowling, Popey.

    You failed to mention that.

And you only mentioned once that I made 50.

    My fielding was good too.
