After 3 washouts we finally completed a game, beating the Fancy Dans on a scorching hot day in Catford. Our opposition - a team of London-based New Zealanders - arrived at 2.25 for a 1.30 start and not in the best of moods, especially when they lost the toss and had to field. Sasi and makeshift opener Chris Collinson put on half-century first wicket stand (who is Andy Spry?) against their excellent opening bowlers but after the skipper was stumped off a wide wickets fell regularly. 7 of us made double figures but Fergus, with 30, was top scorer in a slightly disappointing 218 all out, which included a lot of extras.
Riv dismissed the Dans' number 1 in the first over of the reply (freeing him up to fulfil his role as specialist umpire) and went on to take 4 wickets in an 8-over spell. Rumen and Macca bowled tight spells from the other end and we were well on top with the opposition at 80-odd for 5. The kiwis' left-hander Gregg then gave us a scare with a brutal 66, but a brilliant run-out from Rumen and a conclusive second spell by Fergus saw us home to a relatively comfortable win.
Great to finish a game at last, especially with a good win against a team who beat us last year. One more friendly before our league season starts.
